 Lapo Kabwit and Sensay Festival

A celebration of two integral traditional elements of Dominican Carnival. The sensay costumes are a direct connection to our West African roots. Performances in the sensay costumes accompanied by lapo kabwit bands, traditional Creole instrumental bands named for the goat skin (la peau cabrit) drums.

One of the most popular Carnival competitions. Young women vie for the coveted Miss Dominica crown and are judged on colourful and creative costumes, elegant wear, general speech and comportment. The winner goes on to represent the nation at other regional pageants.

Last round as calypsonians compete for the crown. This is the most popular and biggest cultural show of the year. Patrons come to root for their favourite calypsonian. There are two rounds.

J’ouvert, from the French jour ouvert (day break), is the early morning street partying to the music of traditional lapo kabwit bands. Revellers come out in all manner of fancy dress.

Day two of street partying. Costume bands parade through the streets and compete for “best band”, etc. from 10 am to dusk. The Carnival Queen and the other contestants will be out in their costumes, as well.

 Tewé Vaval  
A traditional burning the effigy of the spirit of Carnival to mark the end of the Carnival festivities and the start of the Lenten observation. It takes its influences from the French, African and Kalinago ancestry. It is observed in specific villages including Colihaut, Dublanc, & in the Carib Territory.
